the Face Unlock function continues to be noticed

After we were able to glimpse some changes on a beta reserved for Pixels, here is a user’s Pixel 6 Pro also mysteriously referring to the Face Unlock feature that we thought was abandoned.

Curious story experienced by a Google Pixel 6 Pro user. The Face Unlock feature that seemed to have been abandoned and therefore should not be present in device mentions, however, has only just resurfaced for a new Google Pixel 6 Pro owner. When configuring his smartphone, a user on Reddit was surprised to see the mention “Face” appear when choosing an unlock option.

Despite leaks announcing that they would embed a facial recognition system, Google’s flagships were finally launched on their release with a unique means of biometric authentication in the presence of a fingerprint reader under the screen, criticized by some users for its slowness.

A unique case

The unlocking methods presented on the screen were here all accompanied by this mention. The user was however not prompted to enter any face unlock option nor did he gain access to this feature in his settings after the fact.

Does this have anything to do with the fact that Google still seems to be working on this right now? After digging deeper into Android 12, the site 9to5Google was able to see that the affected configuration page was already present on the device since its initial build in October 2021, but the reason why it triggered today is still unknown.

A simple software bug?

A few weeks ago we already informed you of internal movements on the side of Google when a developer had been able to see internal changes made in a beta intended for Pixels.

Also note that some of the brand’s marketing materials leaked before the announcement of the smartphones and from German and British retailers also seemed to mention such a feature. Mentions that Google would have deleted shortly after their discovery. Still, we would like to see such an option arrive on Google smartphones.
