Two weeks before its official presentation, the Lexus RZ 450e electric SUV unveils part of its interior where a Yoke-type steering wheel, already seen on the latest generation Tesla Model S and Model X, can notably be enthroned.
Lexus is about to reveal the second electric SUV in its catalog, after a somewhat disappointing Lexus UX 300e when tested in the summer of 2021: between its high prices, average performance and limited autonomy, the Japanese premium brand had some bread on the board to catch up.
This is exactly what it intends to do with its RZ 450e – preconfigured by the LF-Z Electrified concept – which will be based on the same platform as the BZ4X from Toyota, the parent company. And about two weeks before its official presentation, held on April 20, a first image of its interior was published by the brand.
More leg room
What is most striking at first glance is obviously the presence of a Yoke-type steering wheel. This form of steering wheel had met with some media buzz in January 2021: Tesla had indeed decided to install one in its new generations of Model S and Model X. We have since tried it on a Model 3 over several thousand kilometers .
This is not the first time the Yoke steering wheel has been used within the group. Toyota had indeed made it available in China on its bZ4X. Still, the solution presented would provide more legroom while allowing the driver to make a 150 degree turn without having to move his hands, explains Inside electric vehicles.
Available as an option?
Obviously, Lexus should leave the choice to users to choose a more traditional steering wheel or a Yoke type. It would seem logical that the latter is available as an option, and not as standard. Even if Tesla, for its part, decided from the start to impose it on all its new customers, although it would think about backtracking.
always according to Inside electric vehiclesthe rest of the front cabin stands out slightly from the bZ4X, which, we recall, shares the same platform. In particular, it would be a question of a center console more oriented towards the driver and a digital instrument cluster that is also more visible.
